چکیده

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has become a standard procedure to investigate the environmental performance of human-dominated products and processes. It is meant to capture the overall impact of a product or service along its lifetime and supply chain, and it is structured in four steps: goal definition and scoping, inventory, impact assessment, and interpretation. Impact assessment is carried out for an open set of impact categories, which may include abiotic resource depletion (evaluating resource scarcity), cumulative energy demand, global warming, acidification, etc. Where LCA fundamentally differs from Emergy Synthesis is in that the former draws the boundary around the life cycle of the system under study, and looks at impacts that happen as direct consequences of it; conversely, Emergy Synthesis always looks at a system as embedded in the larger natural system that underpins it, and includes all direct and indirect inputs that converged to support it over much larger time and space scales, including ‘freely available’ ones which are typically neglected in LCA (e.g. rainfall, soil organic matter, etc.). From the perspective of the LCA practitioner, the first question regarding the potential use of emergy is that of the added value that it may provide. According to its definition, emergy represents the 'memory' of the total exergy that was previously required to make a product or service. Emergy thus offers arguably a unique donor-side perspective, an approximation of the work of the environment that would be needed to replace what is used, and presents a unified measure of the provision of environmental support. We maintain that it may be viewed as a valuable complement, rather than an alternative, to existing life cycle impact assessment metrics.

An Emergy Comparison of Different Alternatives for the Cogeneration of Heat and Electricity

The study deals with an emergy evaluation of the supply of electricity and heat to a large user, namely a public hospital in Northern Italy. We performed firstly a conventional LCA evaluation, in order to identify and quantify the material and energy flows involved in three cogeneration alternatives for the hospital. The evaluated cogeneration alternatives were: 1) an Internal Combustion Engine...

Making Emergy Analysis More Popular for Environmentally Conscious Design and Manufacturing - Challenges and Opportunities

As the need for changing the current non-sustainable industrial activities becomes increasingly obvious, engineers are being forced to consider more holistic techniques for design and assessment of industrial products and processes. As a result, techniques such as life cycle assessment (LCA) and material flow analysis (MFA) have been developed and are increasingly popular. Many of these techniq...

Emergy of Gold Mined at Yanacocha Based on an LCA Model

A Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) was assembled for gold production extending from the formation of gold-ore deposits through the production of semi-refined gold-silver bullion. Inputs traditionally considered in life cycle assessment (LCA) such as energy, materials, and capital were counted along with geologic inputs and labor. Emergy, rather than traditional LCA methods, was used to make inventory...

Labor and Services

Labor is direct input of human work always accounted for as being a foreground input. Direct labor is accounted for as working hours or years applied and the quality of the worker (unskilled, trained, educated, etc) using Unit Emergy Values for labor based on level of training and education (seJ/person/time). In practice, however, the emergy value of direct labor is computed through the money p...

Dealing with Emergy Algebra in the Life Cycle Assessment Framework

Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) represents one of the four steps of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, which is a standardized procedure (ISO 14040:2006) to estimate the environmental impacts generated by the production, use and delivery of goods and services and final waste disposal. The calculation of emergy using LCI databases is acknowledged to be of great advantage to improve the accu...
